Crepey Skin

July 21, 2016

I think you all know what I mean by Crepey Skin.  It has also been called Elephant Skin, Paper-thin skin or Grandma Skin. Skin that has turned crepey is thin, loose and flaccid with sagging. It is the thinning of the dermis and epidermis that makes skin look like this.  As collagen  & elastin break down, skin folds accumulate and skin starts to thin out. Just because your skin is starting to have a “mind of its own” and lacks the firmness it used to have, does not mean you have to live with it like that.

(All the suggested products will be listed for you at the end)

Let’s talk about the areas that get crepey.

THE FACE:

The eyes are very likely to show crepiness first.  Skin on the cheeks can start to thin, too.  If your facial crepey skin also comes with sunspots, it is a dead giveaway that sun exposure has basically eaten away at your collagen.

How to Fix it:

Cheeks, Face in General: Glycolic Acid can peel away fine lines.  Stimulating collagen with nightly retinol can also do the trick.  A surgical option?  A fractional laser can amend the skin but it has a good degree of downtime.

Eyes: The skin around your eyes is the thinnest skin on the face.  Years of environmental damage and squinting can wear away the thickness of the skin, making the eyes look crepey.  Once that happens, it affects your overall appearance.

How to Fix it:  Peptides and Hyaluronic Acid. Hyaluronic moisturizes and helps skin plump up.  Peptides are small proteins that stimulate the production of collagen.

THE NECK:

Crepey neck skin is different.  Skin just doesn’t become loose; it also develops horizontal bands.  You know, the so called “Turkey Neck”

How to Fix it:

Load your skin with a sculpting agent (DMAE) and firming ingredients like peptides to tighten and moisturize.  This counteracts the loose texture. Hyaluronic acid gives deep moisturization that is also helpful.

Surgical Option:  Fraxel Dual laser.  Botox might help, but only to tighten the neck which will help the crepey skin look less bunched up.

Décolleté:  Same product…DMAE  and Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize.  Dryness only makes the crepiness more pronounced.

KNEES:

Sun exposure is credited with crepey skin on the knees.

How to fix:

DMAE, Hyaluronic Acid.  Basically the same as you would use on your neck.  Remember, you do not need to use too much product.  This is a mistake many women make and then it just becomes too expensive.  Just use enough to penetrate the skin.  You do not need to see a bunch of product on the skin surface after your application.

INNER ARMS:

Same as for the knees and neck.

HANDS:

Aging hands can be rejuvenated. For crepey skin, apply a Retin-A product to the back of the hands nightly and seal it in with hyaluronic acid.  It improves skin texture and your hand skin will look thicker and firmer over time.  Be Consistent!

Surgical Option:  I am told Radiesse can re-volumize the area, but I am skeptical at this point.  I think, what if one part gets plumped up and another part doesn’t? Barbara’s jury is still out on this one. I’d have to experiment for you and I’m not quite ready!  LOL

ARMS & ELBOWS

The underarms and elbows can get really crepey as we age.  OR as you lose weight.
Hormone changes due to menopause can affect these areas most directly

Rebuilding collagen is the best way to take care of this thinning skin on the arms.  For the elbows, I like Retinol and Glycolic acid.  Use the glycolic first, then the retinol.  And keep the elbows moist with hyaluronic acid.

I’ve found some great collagen boosters that can move things along at the same time you are using your topicals.

Reversing crepey skin takes time, but I’m going to fight the good fight.

If you don’t have it yet, Prevention is key. And don’t forget your hormone crème!
