Barbara Says: "Don’t Use Over The Counter Sleeping Pill"

August 24, 2018

Sleep is important.  It is my Secret Weapon.  I get 9 hours per night.  During sleep we reset our hormones and release leptin which helps appetite control.  Low sleep = cravings and weight gain. I have learned from talking to you that millions of you are taking “PM” pain relievers to help you fall asleep.  Diphenhydramine is the most common ingredient. But another sedating antihistamine can also be found in OTC sleeping pills. It is doxylamine.

Both doxylamine and diphenhydramine are sedating antihistamines. They have effects that can cause problems for those of us over the age of 50. These pills interfere with our production of Acetylcholine (ACH) is a brain neurochemical that is essential for memory and many other neurological functions.

If you have ever purchased one of these PM pills, there is no warning about age or memory problems.  One of my ladies told me that her doctor said “oh, don’t worry about it”  Well, you should worry! Time to get off Tylenol PM and the other PM meds that may seem natural, but they are not.  Get normal, restful sleep. Melatonin is the “reset” hormone for restful sleep as it restores circadian rhythm
