The Weight Loss Maze/Myth

Is a Calorie Just a Calorie? I don’t think “Calories in, Calories out” is an accurate assessment. This dictates that if you take in more calories than you expend, you GAIN weight. If you burn more calories at the end of the day than you consume, you LOSE weight.

But a new study published in the BMJ (Nov. 14, 2018) contradicts that old logic. In this study the low-carb diet wins.

Researchers have been studying diets for decades. It is a highly charged topic. Often the loudest voices, who are selling something to help you lose weight, overwhelm solid science.

Let’s put that to rest. For years we were told that fat was the enemy. Calories from fat were supposed to make you fat. It was concluded that if you just eliminated fat, you would lose weight. So….The food industry hopped on the bandwagon. We got low-fat and no-fat foods galore—cookies, yogurt, milk, ice cream—to name just a few. Sugar was a prime ingredient in many of these foods to make up for the lack of flavor from the fat. So…now we are eating more sugar and more carbs. The obesity epidemic went off the charts!

Also…consuming carbs caused bodies to produce too much insulin which can force our fat cells into calorie-storage overdrive. These rapidly growing fat cells hoard way too many calories, leaving too few for the rest of the body. So we get hungry. And that’s not the worst part. If we persist in eating less, our metabolism slows down!

The rigorous new study, in the BMJ, was a very expensive diet...this is why we don’t see a lot of clinical trials about weight loss. But this one was very comprehensive, described as one of the largest ever conducted. The study tested 3 dietary patterns. High Carb, Moderate Carb, or Low Carb.

How the Low-Carb Diet Wins:

1. People who eat low carbs burn many more calories per day

2. Hunger is curbed

3. Insulin remains low, so fat cells do not multiply

I have been studying weight loss programs for over 30 years and developed a wonderful food plan that can help you achieve your weight goal without cravings and constantly feeling hungry.

I am so excited about this new study. It confirms what I have been saying for so many years and encapsulated in my book, Eat Yourself Slender.
